Your Golden Ticket | Unclaimed Property Search

We are busy adulting these days and are working on goals, marketing plans and financial planning. I was filling out a planning worksheet and it asked about past checking, savings, 401K accounts. It occured to me I could absolutely not remember what ever happened to that 401K account I started when I was 22 years old. Did I liquidate it? Merge it? Completely forget about it? It has sent me on a wild goose chase and I ended up at our very own Department of Revenue website. Searching for Unclaimed Property is very easy. Unfortunately, I didn’t find a golden nest egg but the site was fascinating and easy to use. Click on the link below and I hope you find your Golden Ticket!

According to the WA DOL website: Unclaimed property refers to property being held by an organization that has not had contact with the owner for an extended period of time. Property is usually considered unclaimed after three years, when it is turned over to the state of Washington. Banks, retailers, credit unions, utilities, corporations, insurance companies, and governmental entities are some of the many sources of unclaimed property.

The Department of Revenue is the custodian for unclaimed property, and it administers an unclaimed property program to seek the rightful owners.

Typical unclaimed property includes:

  • Bank accounts
  • Insurance proceeds
  • Stocks, bonds and mutual funds
  • Safe deposit box contents
  • Utility and phone company deposits
  • Uncashed checks, such as payroll, insurance payments, or travelers checks
  • Customer/patient credits

Unclaimed property does not include real estate, vehicles, and most other physical property.
