Kitsap Peninsula Hiking

The Kitsap Peninsula is a hiker’s buffet. From gentle urban trails to the moody majesty of the Olympic Mountains, there’s something for every kind of adventurer—trail runners, goat whisperers, or folks who just want a good selfie spot.
Here’s my messy, magical hiking round-up:
1. Mount Ellinor | Hoodsport, WA | Difficult | 14 Miles
I moved to Port Orchard and immediately added Mount Ellinor to my bucket list—mostly because of the rumors about goats. Little did I know this “quick” hike was actually a soul-crushing 14-mile round trip from the lower trailhead. Surprise!
Armed with one water bottle and delusional optimism, I climbed for hours. Blue skies turned to fog, and just as I reached the summit—there he was. A majestic goat, perched like a white-bearded king surveying his kingdom. The Lion King of the Olympics. I cried a little. And then cried more when I realized I had to hike 7 miles back down.
10/10: would do again. But with snacks. And knees that don’t scream at me.

2. Kopachuck State Park | Gig Harbor | Easy to Challenging | Multiple Trails
This one’s a hidden gem. Winding trails, towering trees, and a beach that always stuns. You don’t need a map—just wander and let the mossy magic guide you. I’ve run 2 miles and 7 miles here. Either way, it’s peaceful and lovely and feels like stepping into a fairytale (with cell service!).

3. Tacoma Narrows Bridge | Tacoma/Gig Harbor | Easy | 4 Miles
Running across Galloping Gertie is a whole vibe—equal parts thrill and anxiety. The views? Incredible. The wind? Loud. The intrusive thoughts about flying hubcaps? Real.
Still, crossing this iconic bridge on foot was unforgettable. It’s tall. It sways. And it reminds you that the transition from chaos to calm often starts with a single step.

4. Big Creek Trail | Hoodsport, WA | Challenging | 12 Miles
My first Olympic hike. I thought it was 6 miles. (Are we sensing a theme yet?) The trail winds through the trees and follows streams, and the journey out past Lake Cushman is as stunning as the hike itself.
Wear sleeves—the mosquitoes at the top were having a buffet.

5. Manchester State Park | Port Orchard | Easy | Multiple Trails
Local, beautiful, and full of history. I ran from downtown Manchester into the park and had most of the trails to myself. There’s an interpretive trail and old military structures to explore. It’s peaceful and a great reminder that adventure doesn’t always require a long drive.

Real Talk Tips:
- AllTrails isn’t always accurate. Double-check trailheads, elevation, and distances—especially if you’re not into “surprise” marathons.
- Pack more water than you think. IYKYK.
- Bug spray. Always.
- Don’t chase goats. Let them come to you.

What view in your life was worth the climb, even if you weren’t prepared for how hard it would be?
