Backyard farming provides a multitude of benefits. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is a magical experience and an empowering way to reconnect with your food source and get truly local while eating seasonally.

My husband, Steve, and I have a large backyard that had a 10 x 20 area of grass. We struggled during the summer with keeping the grass green and were frustrated with the expense when this large area was not even a space we ventured out to enjoy. After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 2018 we decided the grassy section of our backyard would be the perfect location for a bountiful healing backyard garden. As amateur gardeners we bought books and began our research. In early March, our life plans were completely derailed and we had to unexpectedly move out of our house for 6 weeks. Our amazing community came together to build the #LoveWins Garden. Our children filled the beds Mother’s Day weekend with soil, compost, seeds and plants. Watching our garden grow has been a gift. We walk it with our coffee first thing in the morning in complete awe at the abundant growth.
Stay tuned for Part II and see how our garden has grown.
