A Midnight Kitchen Makeover & The Power of a Good Friend

From House to Home

Some moves come with color-coded labels and Pinterest-worthy timelines. Mine came with a pandemic, garden chaos, and a whole lot of garlic cloves hiding in weird places. But honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

From Counter Chaos to Culinary Calm

When we moved, I was quick to ditch the boxes but slow to actually settle in. You know the vibe—random stuff gets layered on counters like a Jenga game of intention. And with no guests popping in, I let it be. Because walks, garden time, and sitting on the deck pondering life felt way more important than sorting Tupperware.

But then came Edna. The friend who will cook with you, tell you when there’s cilantro in your teeth, and, at 11 pm on a Tuesday, decide your kitchen needs to start over. Bless her.

She’s not just a ride-or-die, she’s also a ridiculously talented interior designer whose creative energy is contagious. I wish I had before pics, but imagine a kitchen slowly eaten alive by garden bounty and mail piles.

At 11:03 pm, Edna started her magic. By midnight we had:

  • Decluttered every surface
  • Rearranged key zones
  • Made a list of things we actually needed

Our biggest problem? The garden. (I love her, but she’s needy.) Produce was homeless. Edna and I headed to my favorite shop—White Barn Home & Garden in Belfair—and found the perfect skinny basket. It holds zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, and that one rogue cucumber.

In just one hour, the kitchen transformed. It became peaceful again. Functional. A happy place that didn’t stress me out when I walked in barefoot holding a cup of tea.

Edna, my fairy godfriend, is available for consults if you need someone to wave a wand over your cluttered kingdom. Check out her work—she’s magic.

We all need that friend or relative that will cook with you in the kitchen, tell you that you have cilantro between your front teeth and at midnight redo your entire kitchen. That person in my life is my dear friend Edna. She also happens to be a brilliant interior designer and her ease for creativity is infectious. I wish I had thought to take before pictures but the following is my incredible kitchen transformation.

Have you cleaned out a space or room recently? Send me pictures. I need inspiration and motivation.
